Currently, the Philippines is divided into 17 regions and 16 administrative groups. The Philippine President assigns a Regional Development Committee (RDC) to every group. The National Capital Region also has a separate metropolitan body coordinating agencies and policy development. There is only one elected government, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, and the Philippine Congress has given it certain powers and responsibilities.
In the Philippines, administrative divisions play a key role in facilitating program coordination and the delivery of national government services. Local government units (LGUs) are responsible for this coordination, with most national government offices offering services through their regional branches rather than operating directly at the provincial or municipal level. These regional offices are usually (but not always) located in cities designated as regional centers.
